"Dear Editor / News organization:

Thank you for featuring Solair Recreation League, a nudist resort in Connecticut, in a recent article.  We are pleased to have more people learn about Solair and what nudism means to the more than 50,000 members of the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR).  While the publicity has been overwhelmingly positive, it has also engendered some incorrect assumptions and downright nasty comments:

  • All nudists are oldFact: Although the majority of AANR members are 35 and older, many of these folks began in their early 20’s or as children of nudist families. In addition, there are thousands of nudists (i.e., college students and those unaffiliated with a nudist organization) who are much younger.

  • The aging nude body, with its sagging, wrinkled skin, is disgusting.  Fact: Nudism is about body acceptance...no matter the age, size or condition...and not about body image.  It allows us the freedom to be who we are and to interact with one another as equals.  It also helps counter the veneration of youth to the detriment of our fast-growing aging society.

  • Nudism is about sex. Wrong, wrong, wrong.  Fact: Nudists believe that the nude body is not provocative in the social setting.  Wearing skimpy, tight, revealing clothing is about sex.

  • Raising children as nudists and having them present with nude people is evil, perverted and damaging. Again, totally untrue. Fact:  Feedback from young nudists and observations at nudist teen camps demonstrate better communication, healthier relationships, and less sexual exploitation than within the clothed community.

  • Nudist camps are the Mecca for pedophiles and peeping toms.  Fact: Camps like Solair are safer and more secure than the outside world.  Criminal and sexual offender checks; strictly enforced rules of conduct; and a close-knit, caring and watchful community maintain the highest levels of personal protection for members and visitors.

While there are many benefits to the nudist lifestyle, they often get lost in the perpetuation of negative notions and stereotypes. Moreover, nudists, whether police officer, teacher, minister, nurse, doctor or chef, would never trade the freedom, acceptance or close friendships formed if these myths had even an ounce of truth. Of course, to truly find this out, we invite you to try it for yourself. As we at Solair say, "Come for a day; stay for a lifetime.”
